Colter's Story
After what seemed like forever, he is finally here! Our baby that we had prayed for is now a part of our life.
Kory and I were married in 2005 and both wanted to have kids - me 1-2 in a few years, him 2-3 right away. We started trying right after getting married, as infertility was happening on my side of the family. And being in our late 20s, we wanted to use our youth to our advantage. After a year of not getting pregnant, we started the journey of infertility treatments. To be exact, seven inseminations (one that led to a pregnancy that ended in miscarriage after eight weeks) and one IVF cycle that led to being pregnant with Colter. After going through all of those shots, hormones, and emotions, we were so excited to have reached our goal.
Pregnancy for the most part was great for me. Just a little nausea early on and heartburn at the end. Other than that I had a great appetite, was kept warm all winter with my personal heater and felt awesome.
My due date was January 30, 2009. And much to my surprise, he came a little early. I had been telling myself he wouldn't be making his debut until at least my due date. I didn't think I was feeling anything. A few days before his arrival (January 22), I had mild pain followed by gas, so that's all I thought it was. And my doctor's office, who is the only office not to check, had not checked for dilation or effacement, ever.
So on Wednesday, January 21, I went about my daily routine, went to work - out to lunch for Mexican with coworkers - almost had to pick up Kory when his truck wouldn't start - talked on the phone for an hour with my mom before going to bed. I had just gone to bed that night and started to feel a trickle. Got up, went potty and was trickling some more. Could this be it? I so kindly interrupted Kory from the last 15-minutes of the season premier of his favorite show, Lost, to come help with this dilemma. I said no this couldn't be it, it was only a small amount, not a gush like you see on TV. I had remembered earlier that day asking my friend at work if she knew how much came out when your water broke (coincidence?). Kory read from one of the pregnancy books and decided we should call the doctor, just to check. They told us to go to the hospital to get looked at. It could be my water had broke or it could be my bladder was leaking from the strain of the baby. So at about 10pm we drove the 10-minutes to Skyridge Medical Center, not sure what to expect next. I think Kory was ready, but I was in denial about it being real. Until we parked and I started feeling cramps, spaced evenly apart.
We got checked into the hospital, wrist band and all. The nurse in triage asked how much I was dilated at my last doctors appointment. She couldn't believe it when I said my office doesn't do that. She checked for herself and I was 1 cm dilated and 100% effaced. Yikes! We were going to be having the baby!
They put us in a delivery room - suite is more like it. You labor and deliver there. I decided we should try and sleep, as I knew I would have some sort of challenge ahead of me. That didn't last long as the contractions were getting more painful. After about 3 hours, the nurse came in and talked me into an epidural. I knew I wanted one eventually, just didn't know it would be this soon. By that point I was 3 cm dilated.
The anesthesiologist was going to be busy with a c-section, so they wanted to get my epidural out of the way. Not sure if it was the lack of sleep, denial about being where I was or the unknown, but I did not like this person. As we got started, I had a major panic attack. Not a good thing to have as someone is going to put something in your spine. It took him a few tries to get it right as I was not wanting (able) to be any bit calm. Half way through, I hear a thud. My husband, who was sitting to the front of me (not able to see what they were doing), had fainted. We think the mark on the back of his neck was from the nurse trying to grab him as he fell forward hitting the bed. Of course, she denied knowing how he had got it. The epidural was finally put in and my pain was going away.
I tried to sleep, but my mind was racing. I think Kory got about 3 hours of sleep. About 6am, Kory called a few family members to tell them what was going on. We had remembered how some did not want a middle of the night call saying I was in labor. The only person who lives close to us is Aunt Marcia. She decided to come to the hospital. Previously, I wasn't sure if I would want anyone besides Kory with me. I'm glad she came and stayed during the hard part. She was a great support during the pushing. Which funny as it may sound, I had forgot about by then. I was so exhausted and out of it, I didn't know or care how the baby was getting out of me. Also, in our childbirth prep class, they really didn't go over the whole pushing part. The teacher just said the nurses would tell you what to do and how to breath. Pushing was hard because I was so tired and I couldn't feel the area that I needed to push, that was weird. The whole thing was a blur, but I do remember craving real strawberries - odd. Three hours later, our baby was here.
We welcomed Colter at 12:20pm. He was 6 lb, 6 oz and 19-3/4'' - tiny little baby. And a healthy one, too! We couldn't have asked for more.

36 weeks

36 weeks, 0 days
The belly keeps getting bigger! We took this one New Years day, so we did it in the afternoon. Notice Molly trying to be in the picture :-) And I look a lot bigger than I feel, I blame that shirt, it is a bit fitted. Really don't like that picture. I look really pale.
Starting next week I will go in every week for check-ups. My last appt. was fine. Blood pressure was normal, baby's heart rate was 140, belly measured right on. However, the Dr. said there was a little sugar in my urine, which was fine. I had just made sugar cookies a few days before and had eaten one for lunch that day. Actually, I've been enjoying more than the usual amount of sugar from all the Christmas goodies and meals.
Baby should be about 5 lb. and the size of a honeydew melon, according to somewhere I read. He seemed to be moving more when I went back to work Monday and Tuesday, but maybe I just notice it more since I move less at work. I've still been sleeping good, except for having to get up and pee at least two times a night. That was until last night, when baby woke me with really strong hiccups. Hope that doesn't keep happening.
Still get tired easier and lots of leg cramping, especially when I walk or stand for too long. And I have built a holster for my bottle of Pepcid :-)
Baby's room is really almost done now. Kory still needs to build a bookshelf, but that might not happen until Spring when it will be warmer to work out in the garage. I could sew some burp clothes if I feel like it. Need to put the glider chair up in the room. We have been enjoying it in the living room for now. And about all I have left to buy is a breast pump. I borrowed a bunch of stuff from Marcia, such as clothes, towels, and a barely used infant seat. All we need now is a baby!

Christmas Cookies
...and other holiday treats were made this weekend. I made fudge, rice krispie treats and sugar cookies (requested by Kory). He even helped frost them. Where I like to take my time and make them look pretty, including making a 'L' and a 'S', Kory mostly quickly frosted them one color. We used snowflake cookie cutters that Lesley gave me for Christmas last year. The cookies from them looked more like flowers. We ended up with spring colors of yellow, green and blue, since we didn't have any red. I had used that up awhile ago to make blood (food coloring and karo syrup) at work for a photo shoot. 32 weeks

32 weeks, 0 days
A few days late posting this months belly photo. Although, it was taken on Friday. Notice it is really dark now at 5pm!
I go every two weeks for check-ups now. The last one two weeks ago was routine with nothing exciting to report about (that's how we like it). Heart rate was 137 bpm. I think my last weekly babycenter e-mail reported the baby is about 3.75lb., he's getting bigger! And so am I. He gets the hiccups almost every day. It's really neat. I read it's good when they get them; they are practicing for when they have to breath in the real world.
I'm getting into the rougher part of pregnancy. I can't do as much and get tired more easily. Notice I don't post as frequently. My back doesn't usually hurt, but my legs sure do. I've been trying to do Denise Austin Fit and Firm Pregnancy DVD, the 20-minute toning and that helps a lot. The indigestion and heartburn has come back. Almost every day, no matter what I eat. Pepcid tablets are my new candy :-).
The baby's room is almost done. I need to finish the valence that Mom helped me with, wash the cloths and put them in the dresser (that is built), put up some more wall decorations, find homes for random items, and get Kory to build a bookshelf. Less than 2-months to go. We are really getting excited!

28 Weeks

28 weeks, 0 days
Latest belly picture at 28 weeks! It was cold yesterday, so my hands are in my pockets. Just wait until January when I take my monthly picture... brrr! Also, you'll notice it's not as sunny out as in previous pictures. I take these pictures at about 5pm when I get home from work and now it is darker then.
Today I went to a check-up. It was the normal stuff - take blood pressure and weight, measure belly and listen to baby! Heartbeat was about 140. Also, I had to do the glucose test, where you drink the disgusting glucose orange drink, to test for gestational diabetes. And they gave me a rhogam shot. Kory actually came to this appt., since he is not busy at work and we carpooled today.
According to my weekly babycenter.com e-mail, baby is about the size of a head of cauliflower. He's kicking along quite frequently. Some days more than others. I get back aches if I'm not careful about how I'm standing or sitting. And my legs feel stiff when I wake up. Is that just from getting older?

Photo Booth

I got a new Mac at work. The old one will be going home with me to use to work at home when I'm on maternity leave. This iMac has a camera at the top and a fun program call Photo Booth. I think you can even use the camera feature to video chat with people. But I don't know anyone else with such a computer to video chat back at me.
